Chainsaw training in Culag Wood
During last autumn, four local men under went an intensive 5 day training course to gain a Chainsaw Certificate. They all successfully passed their assessment in November, and can now safely cut trees in the wood proving a real help on our Firewood Saturday sessions and other ongoing maintenance work in the wood. Well Done to all involved!
Since then more volunteers have learned new wood handling skills involving winching huge wind blown trees away from the main paths, helping to improve access in the woods and clear areas to help the young trees to grow.

EDUCATION AT THE TRUST -
everything from Chainsawing to Weaving!
We recently held an old woodland lichen identification course in Culag Woods. About a dozen people learned about the complex relationship it plays in the biodiversity of the wood and of course how to identify the many different types. Hopefully the second part to this course will take place later soon and will enable our trained lichen identifiers to undertake survey and monitoring.
Thomas and Lesley Kilbride (based in Applecross) headed north with many beautiful articles of weaving and to provide two days of inspirational teaching. Seven individuals learned how to create unique (and never to be repeated because the mistakes will be different next time!) pieces of weaving from hats and, baby's blankets to dinner mats and rugs. A four shaft loom that sits on your table costs about £50 and you can go from fleece to floor rug quite quickly. The fun is creating something beautiful, useful and unique without spending ages learning and polishing skills.
Bracken information day
As part of our involvement with the Non Timber Forest Products work, we recently held a useful information session with Dr Eric Donnelly, a expert in all things bracken related! Read more..
